Laura Ganvik, left, and Lacie Hamiel prepare to present their speeches at the Communications Mini Fair April 5.
Formal Speech
5-10 minutes in length for juniors and 7-10 minutes for seniors. A formal speech does not incorporate any props in the presentation. Illustrated Talk 10-15 minutes in length. An illustrated talk should incorporate the use of visual aids (posters, supplies, equipment, etc.) to illustrate the topic being presented. A demonstration should show a step-by-step procedure and explain why each step is essential in developing a particular skill or task. Team Demonstration Same as the Illustrated Talk/Demonstration, but presented by two 4-Her's together. |
What is easier than talking about your horse? Put together a well-researched, well-practiced speech about anything horse-related and present your talk or demo individually or with a partner. The local contest is April 5. Contact the extension office for contest details. *Note: This contest extends from the regional level into the state and national levels. We strongly encourage your participation to represent McHenry County 4-H.
The objectives of the speech contests include:
All presentation subjects must pertain to the horse industry or be horse related. Material must be original and factual. Because of indoor facilities, presentations should not involve the use of live animals, however, model animals may be used. A 3-point penalty will be imposed for each minute or fraction of a minute under the minimum or over the maximum time allowed. Interested 4-H members should enroll in the Communications project. Anyone can register to compete at the state level competition. $5 fee to enter, but Horse Committee may be able to cover costs. If you have any fundraising ideas to suggest, that would be great! |
